Barbara Bickell's assemblages are a combination of painting and sculpture on a small scale, using natural materials and man-made objects. They are worlds inside a shadow box—idealized landscapes—representing optimism and hope.

About the Artist
Barbara Bickell was born in Toronto, Canada and embarked on her art education at Sheridan College School Of Crafts And Design and at the Ontario College Of Art. Besides having served as Artist in Residence at Artpark in Lewiston, New York, she has given workshops at the Haliburton School Of Fine Arts and at The Ontario Science Centre.

Her work has been selected to appear in The Canadian Museum Of Civilization, in The Royal Ontario Museum, and in numerous galleries and juried shows in Ontario. Her works are included in The Jean A. Chalmers Collection, as well as in private collections in Japan, Australia, the United States, Europe, and Canada.

Barbara Bickell's works are an engaging combination of painting and sculpture on a small scale. The boxes are assemblages of natural materials—e.g. eggs, feathers, twigs—and man-made objects.

The boxes are dreamscapes, as seen through a window, idealized landscapes in miniature, or the possibility of a whole universe inside a box. They represent optimism and hope, a journey toward enlightenment. Or a tiny version of heaven.
