Art, for me, is a means of self expression. There are many who believe that the arts speak to the emotional mind. If this is so, then it can also be said that the artist draws from the emotional mind in the creation of his/her art. This has been my experience. As the logic of the emotional mind is associative, I have also found it very helpful to call upon intuition, imagination and memory to aid in the creative process. I have learned not to get too attached to a plan for a painting as it almost always has a plan of its own. This is often described as “the brush taking the next stroke.” There’s no way of knowing where a painting will go. No piece is completed until it “feels” right. As the Scottish artist, Paul Gardner said, “A painting is never finished. It simply stops in interesting places.”
