Paul Portelli - Hand Built Terracotta Sculpture
Paul Portelli is a professional full-time sculptor living and working near the Village of Warkworth, Ontario. His most recent work is hand-built terracotta sculpture. Every piece is individual. From amusing and fanciful to thought provoking imagery, they are executed with a flair that has proved to have a wide appeal.
"I manipulate the natural beauty and versatility of terracotta clay with colour and glazes to create whimsical circus animals, dragons with attitude, and a full range of functional pieces and figurative work."
"A press mold process is used for the mask series. The faces only are pulled from original molds and then embellished individually with leaves, fruit and flower. Figurative work is sculpted directly from the model in my Warkworth studio. After being fired, the sculptures are given a cold wash finish. Many of my works have been exhibited in public and private galleries and are held in private collections across North America and Europe."
A study in spiritualism, drawing inspiration from myths and stories found in the mysteries of religion and mythology, greatly influenced by the Baroque period and the Neo Classic movement of the early 19th century.
