Sue Hawley is a self-described artist, happy wife, proud Canadian, rural property owner, and optimist. She is also and environmentalist with a growing awareness of global responsibility that she takes very seriously.

Working in two-dimensional mixed media relief, Sue finds her abstract images from places deep within her memories and experiences. Most pieces have their origins on a wood support and from there the texture is built up using a variety of materials including plaster, cloth, paper, and wire. Much of which is recycled material found in her own house. Acrylic paints and mediums are used to colour and add further dimension to her works.

‘Impressions of Metal’ represents a personal and abstract vision that began in 1993 after serving with the United Nations in Bosnia. A catalogue of mental images relating to war was created, but of specific interest was the effect of the great destructive forces upon metal. These forces and the waste of both human and material resources became a metaphor of the broader general conflict and created for her an avenue with which to explore the darker side of the human condition. The images and subsequent art born of that conflict have been her attempt to resolve within herself, the seeming age old question of “why?”.

In recent years, Sue has shown a trend toward more clearly defined images and subject matter although they too remain intensely personal. Balance, flow and composition are all central in creating pieces that feel “right” to her.

Winding down her 23 year Air Force career is a major milestone in her life and as such, Sue has been spending much of her last several years reviewing her life, looking for metaphors to best represent new beginnings and emerging ideas for a better world.
