October is Arts Month in Northumberland County
October is Arts Month is a collaborative county wide initiative that aims to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement in arts, culture and heritage throughout communities and municipalities in Northumberland County. It will include all areas of professional and amateur arts; performing and visual as well as heritage activities, fueled by a collective will and community based initiatives.
The website will be up and running on May 31st where members can post links and include on the calendar any event they wish to participate in. Address is: www.octoberisartsmonth.ca
Spirit of the Hills is working hard with other associations to make this a success. Spirit board member Maureen Hubble, wrote in to say, “We are looking for people who wish to volunteer to help organize the actual conference which kicks off with a gala reception on the Friday night and courses/lectures throughout the day on the Saturday. They are being held at the Fleming College Campus in Cobourg. This will be a great opportunity to launch all the various attractions happening right here in the Hills of Northumberland during the whole month of October. This is going to hopefully become an annual event. Interested volunteers should email me at burnleyridge@xplornet.com with questions or to sign up for a task or two”.
The month long event will affect a major shift in attitudes about arts, culture and heritage (long-term goal), and build a stronger sense of value and engagement by citizens in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

Fourth Annual Juried Photography Show and Sale
Winners were announced August 15th in the fourth annual Spirit of the Hills Photography Show and Sale held in association with the Warkworth Long Lunch. Nineteen local photographers contributed a total of 49 photographs each capturing a variety of style, mood, colour and locations. The show was held at the Percy Heritage Centre (Memorial Community Hall), 35 Church Street in Warkworth.
Every year a different judge reviews all entries and declares the winners during the long lunch on Sunday. This year's judge was Michael van Leur who lives and works in Toronto. He is a judge in the Pirelli Photography Awards as well as for other community based associations in Toronto. He has 25 years experience in professional photography and has worked for Macleans, Toronto Life, and Report on Business magazines amongst others. The 49 photographs were judged on composition, technical merit, and mood.
The first place “BEST IN SHOW” winner was Robert Laycock for the photograph entitled “Pickerel Weed” because, said judge Michael van Leur, “The photograph’s beautiful composition draws the viewer’s eye around and through the image. The softened reflections add an element of surprise but still manage to lead the viewer’s eye movement through the image.” The “Best In Show” prize of $250 was generously donated by Meirion Jones - Sutton Group.
Second place was awarded to Margaret Hamilton for her photograph entitled “Absent”. The judge observed that, “The destination of the tones, with the exception of the red seats on the chairs, creates an interesting juxtaposition of elements. The row of the four hats with the three chairs leads one to think about the image more deeply.” The second prize of $100 was sponsored by J. Bruce Taylor Accounting
An Honourable Mention for third place was awarded to Linda Greenwood photograph “Upon Reflection” because of the “good composition”. The judge liked “the way the reflection under the boat reveals the details under the water. The boat and the reflection break up the elements within the image beautifully”. Linda also won the People’s Choice Award.
Other honourable mentions were:
- Jennifer Gibson’s “Reveal”: “interesting composition of the black bands which create and interesting photo”.
- Leah Murray’s “In Dexter’s Eye”: nice technique, Polaroid transfer and display.
- Robert Laycock’s “Snow circle”: lovely composition
- Isabel Veldtuis, “Carriage Shed”: beautiful contrast, look and feel.
- Tom Groot’s “Vying for attention”: strong composition
