Helen Mason
Imagine the AHA! moment when you understand how the Pythagorean relationship can help you build a square door. It is easier to learn difficult concepts when you see how you can use the skill in your own life.
After teaching many students with emotional and learning difficulties, Helen was inspired to work for the Canadian textbook industry. As well as textbooks, she writes non-fiction materials related to the school curriculum. Her published works include:
- Great Careers for People Interested in Food (Trifolium, 1996)
- Great Careers for People Who Like Working with People (Trifolium, 1994; British edition, Kogan Page, 1997)
- Great Careers for People Who Like Being Outdoors (Trifolium, 1993)
- Horsing Around Toronto and Beyond (Whitecap Books, 1993)
- Life in a Pond (Durkin Hayes, 1992)
- Life in a Forest (Durkin Hayes, 1992)
- Life at the Seashore (Durkin Hayes, 1990)
- Settlement of the West: Cora Hind—Journalist (Grolier, 1990)
- Bluebirds for Tomorrow (Fly Fishing Canada, 1987)
- Make Mine Maple: A Complete Manual of Maple Sugaring. (Highway Book Shop, 1983) Under the name Helen Mason Hosick.
Helen has also published hundreds of general interest articles in magazines in Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines. She is currently working on a teen novel.
After more than 30 years in the publishing industry, Helen offers workshops that show the process of publication in From Idea to Finished Book. She also speaks about the many changes in the publishing industry. The first time she used cut and paste to edit a manuscript, for example, she worked with scissors and a bottle of glue.
Helen was awarded the Gregory Clark Outdoor Writing Award for an article she wrote for Conservator and the Pete McGillen Award for her contributions to the Outdoor Writers of Canada.
