Ivan Unwin - Painting
Having graduated Art school in England as a sculptor my work soon moved into the area of avant guard performance art, then as a natural progression I started to make short super 8 films a collection titled “Flickering Shadows” was distributed by Factory Records in 1985. I received Arts Council Awards to produce several films now archived in the UK LUX Film Catalogue, as well as having a short film “TOXIC” broadcast on C4TV. My final film ECLIPSE had a screening at the ICA in London, I stopped art film making, and worked professionally for 15 years in the music videos industry, as an art director / set designer for Oasis, The Cure, Spice girls, Cold Play, and Pink Floyd to name but a few of the many artists I had worked for. The Advertising industry followed that, and as I felt my creativity being drained in the mediocrity of corporate identity my wife and I purchased a run down cabin in a remote part of misty midge infested Western Scotland where my desire to make my own work was rejuvenated, painting landscapes, from the most atmospheric scenery imaginable. Before leaving England I had a Scottish landscape work selected at The Royal Academy summer show.
With a pin a map and the internet we ended up in Trent Hills in 2006.
The youthful, post punk, themes explored in my earlier film work of Industrial and environmental destruction, are now again starting to challenge me, from a pastoral tradition of landscape painting. I am beginning to feel a confidence in the direction my work is now going towards.
